“Continually striving to reach the whole child must be our goal, so that the message of Jesus Christ not only engages their hands, arms and mind, but penetrates deep into their heart for life.”

Creating moments that children remember long after the final song.
A Ministry Rooted in Joy
For more than three decades, James Wahl has devoted his life to helping children discover the joy of the Gospel through music, storytelling, and authentic Catholic faith formation. A composer, liturgist, educator, and speaker, James believes that children learn best when they are invited to participate fully, engaging not only their minds but also their hearts, voices, and imaginations. His programs transform classrooms, churches, and assembly spaces into places where children are encouraged to encounter Christ in ways that are joyful, memorable, and deeply rooted in the traditions of the Catholic Church.
That vision has guided a lifetime of ministry. As Director of Liturgy and Music at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, James has helped shape worship, lead parish life, and mentor generations of young people. His work has also taken him to Catholic schools, diocesan events, and national conferences, where he shares his philosophy of children’s liturgy and faith formation with educators and ministry leaders from across the country. Whether standing before hundreds of students in a school gymnasium or speaking to fellow Catholic educators, James brings the same mission to every audience: helping children experience the joy of knowing Christ in ways they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
It All Began at Home
“James Wahl was first inspired to write Catholic children’s music when his two oldest children were in preschool. His desire to pass on the faith to his sons in a lively, energetic way led to the composition of his first original song, ‘Jonah.’”
— GIA Publications Artist Biography

What began as a father’s desire to share his faith with his own children soon grew into a lifelong ministry. Decades later, James continues that same mission by helping Catholic schools, parishes, and families create joyful encounters with Christ through music, storytelling, and active participation.
Whether leading a school assembly, parish mission, or workshop for educators, every program reflects the same purpose that inspired his very first song: helping children discover that the Gospel is something to be experienced with joy.
